Overview
Throughout August, Mill Tye Gallery celebrates contemporary textiles with its Summer Textile Festival, featuring Hand Woven Landscapes: From Mill to Loom by Summer Artist in Residence Helena Powell.
A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, Helena represents a new generation of contemporary makers bringing fresh energy to Britain’s rich textile traditions. Deeply inspired by Suffolk’s landscape and Sudbury’s historic silk industry, her work combines traditional hand-weaving techniques with bold contemporary colour and design.
Using silk, hand-painted yarns and intricate woven structures influenced by historic Huguenot jacquard weaving, Helena creates tactile abstract textiles that reflect rhythm, landscape and memory. At the centre of the exhibition will be a working loom installed within the gallery, allowing visitors to experience the slow, skilful process of weaving first-hand and see how fabric develops from thread to finished cloth.
