Words in Bloom - English artist Jessica Palmer takes her art to the heart of America
Despite one artwork going missing in transit for two weeks, May still sees the opening of a new, nearly year‑long exhibition in St Louis, USA, featuring SDC Member Jessica Palmer. Jessica is presenting a stunning collection of her paper artworks at the Missouri Botanical Garden as part of The Literary Garden, a show that brings together art, storytelling, and the natural world.
The theme of the exhibition celebrates two of Jessica Palmer's biggest passions: books and gardens. Her Missouri Wildflower Florilegium - a series of 100 individual botanical collages - will be displayed alongside her monumental 13-foot-long Glory of the Garden papercut, featuring 100,000 cuts from a single sheet of paper. Her Literary Garden Timeline is complemented by 7 Paper Queens, each representing a different era in garden history and the evolving role of botany as inspiration in art and writing.
From her studio in Bath, Jessica explains, “Each piece expresses my work with paper as a medium in sculpture, paper cutting, and collage. The biggest challenge was finding a way to create something in the UK that I could box up and send by post to fill a gallery in the US. This is the result.”
The exhibition invites visitors to explore the connection between nature and literature through Jessica's delicate and imaginative paper art.
