Caroline Hyde-Brown MSDC

Stitched & Constructed Textiles

About Caroline
Caroline's commitment to research allows her to understand, observe and listen. By taking time to build and develop a trusted relationship with the transient beauty of our natural resources, she can forage and handle the raw plant material, which in turn results in a deeper understanding of interconnected processes. The slow transformation and construction of regenerative textile pieces combined with embroidery and weave helps explain an immersive and personal approach to process, materials and making, creating a narrative that aligns itself with lifelong learning.
Biography Back to top

Caroline originally trained in Fashion Design but in 1992 she decided to study Textile Design and specialise in embroidery & weave at Nottingham & Trent University. She specialises in contemporary embroidery and weave. Her work combines a modern aesthetic with the quality of traditional technique. Investigating natural fibres and waste plant residue she creates innovative surfaces often with vermicelli stitch and wing-tipped needles.

Her creative practice spans nearly thirty years. Over this time she has built up a successful freelance career. Travel and education, combined with socially engaged art projects are an integral part of her practice. Design, production and manufacture for three major retail stores, Liberty Plc, John Lewis UK & Takashimaya, Japan & Malaysia.

At the Country Living Spring Fair, during 2002 Caroline received a commission from the Japanese store, Takashimaya, to exhibit at the British Makers Promotion alongside the Princess Diana Althorpe Collection. Working and travelling along the East & West Coast of Japan had a profound effect on her practice as a research artist. Audience development and uncovering historic and ancient artforms such as Hapa-Zome, Ikebana and natural dyeing also uncovered traditional Japanese aesthetics, such as Wabi Sabi. This world view centres on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. She constantly strives to maintain a strong sense of global responsibility and her approach is one of simplicity, co-creation, and collaboration.

A holistic and circular approach underpins interdisciplinary research. By forming partnerships with others she can study non-conformity and indigenous practices. This helps shape and formulate ideas which when combined with the extraction of natural colour from flowers, herbs and weeds thus echoing the ephemeral and fragile quality of the threads. A substantial amount of time and research is given into sourcing plant materials and her diploma in Botany helps Caroline to understand the nature and origin of each piece.
