About Isabel
Isabel Bermudez has been practising her craft for six years. Her work is hand-sewn on silk or bark cloth. She is inspired by what she sees around her (often the Kent countryside near her home, but also urban scenes) and by memories of her native Colombia. For her, the haptic element of embroidery is crucial. Most interested in line and colour, Isabel chooses needle and thread to best meet a need to recreate the world around her or her interpretation of it.

Biography Back to top

Isabel Bermudez is a poet and textile artist. Born in Bogota and educated in England, she worked as a documentary film-maker in the UK and Colombia, then trained as a teacher at the UEA. On her return from living and working in Colombia in 2001, Isabel began writing poetry, and published several collections of poems including 'Serenade', 'Sanctuary' and 'Bar de las Reminiscencias' while working as a peripatetic private tutor - she now works in the SEN department of an Academy in South East London. She makes large embroidered pieces using cotton on silk, or silk thread on silk from her original drawings. She likes to begin with a clear idea of what she aims to achieve. She will spend three to four months on a large piece.
