Biography Back to top

Joe is passionate about furniture! - He particularly enjoys making objects and passing on his knowledge to the next generation of furniture designers and makers. After fourteen years teaching at Rycotewood he recently moved to the Sylva Foundation to establish a new project. The vision for the Sylva Wood School is to fill some of the gaps in formal wood related education, from creating business enterprise opportunities for graduates to developing inspirational woodwork courses for young people.

In 2018 Joe was awarded a Churchill Fellowship, travelling to Europe and the USA, to explore world renowned furniture courses to understand how they support graduates to become skilled craftspeople. This incredible experience will certainly inform his work.
In 2019 he was awarded a Masters certificate from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers in recognition of his work within the industry.

Joe enjoys making objects from home-grown timber and is currently exploring green-woodworking skills in his garden workshop.
