Joe is passionate about furniture! - He is an experienced designer, maker and teacher who particularly enjoys making objects and passing on his knowledge to the next generation of furniture designers and makers. He leads the Sylva Foundation’s Wood School which aims to support a revival of Britain’s wood culture through excellence in creativity and craftsmanship using home-grown timber.

After fourteen years teaching at Rycotewood Oxford, Joe was awarded a Churchill Fellowship. He travelled to Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and the USA, to explore the future of furniture craft education. The experience was enlightening, providing the inspiration for a unique Wood School in his own vision, with professional workshops and innovative courses.

Recent work includes the development of a gender diversity project that envisions a thriving, inclusive and diverse woodworking sector enriched by the creativity and perspectives of women, trans and non-binary makers. Creation of a network of woodworking and furniture making teachers and several collaborations with UK furniture manufacturers.
