Kas Williams LSDC
Mixed Media
Kas’ work is defined by the layering of shades, tones and transparencies to create complex surfaces that are both tactile and visually engaging. She uses a fusion of diverse processes and techniques to create sophisticated contemporary artworks that have a strong sense of texture and rhythm combined with a sense of musicality in gestures and marks. She works intuitively in an abstract way using vibrant colour, texture and pattern to bring a sense of playfulness and depth to her compositions and it is a process that generates diversions and discoveries along the way so 'what if" is a recurring question. It’s an organic way of working - a subconscious gathering of observations, inspirations and responses to combinations of materials, marks and patterns that percolates over time into layers of ideas and images. She always looks for a balance between complexity and elegance so it’s often in the editing and taking away of elements that the final piece comes into view.
Learning the craft of printing in a traditional way has deeply influenced her approach and taught her process, chemistry and the science of colour. It also finely tuned a natural way of thinking in layers so embracing digital technology in some parts of her work has been a natural progression allowing her to innovate and make pieces that couldn’t be made any other way.
