Nikki Parmenter MSDC

Mixed Media

About Nikki
Nikki trained as a fine artist and taught at secondary school level for thirty years. As a practising artist she initially focussed on two dimensional pieces on paper, but a change of direction resulted in a fascination with textiles and mixed media. Nikki places great importance on drawing and expresses this through the medium of free machine embroidery. Nikki has an extensive knowledge of the manipulation of a range of media, often combining unusual materials together to create a coherent whole. Finished pieces can be monumental or more intimate in scale.
Biography Back to top

Nikki specialises in large scale, detailed and colourful pieces. Her work can reference symbolism, literature, history, religion, mythology, art and design, different cultures and the natural world. Pieces are predominantly narrative and typically highlight a story or issue.

She is currently investigating environmental issues in her series of wall hangings "Wonder Rooms" which examine endangered or extinct birds, animals, flora and fauna. She is particularly drawn to animals and birds and investigates how they are perceived through mythical, symbolic and cultural perspectives.

Layering and collage feature in all of Nikki's work, whether that be fusing fabrics together or plastics and cellophane.
