Zoë Scutts MSDC
Mixed Media
Zoe Scutts, is a British artist working in a variety of 3-dimensional media. Her early career, before motherhood, was as a graphic designer. Text and typography play a central role in her creative practise. Much of her work revolves around taking 2-dimensional letter forms and creating 3-dimensional sculptures that explore this primary method of communication into a physical interaction.
Her design ethos of purity and minimalism is realised into beguilingly simple yet elegant creations. The craft and attention to detail is paramount whatever she makes.
With a Degree in Graphics and a Masters from the Royal College of Art in Ceramics and Glass her inspirations come from varied sources. Her work combines a Japanese serenity with British irony. She quotes her influences as coming from a myriad of sources including John Cage, Bruno Munari and Tado Ando.
Working primarily with clay and glass her sculptural pieces have a calm but powerful aura. It is as these natural materials have been honed into simple elegant messages crafted with love and devotion. The work looks familiar, as she references the everyday and wants to make work that appeals equally to all viewers. Her work is democratic and approachable.
Zoe’s work plays with materiality. Her artworks use these materials in a unique way, a way that questions our assumptions of what is soft and what is hard, what is heavy and what is light.
