Society announces a new Interim Chair of the Council
Nikkan Woodhouse has been announced as the new interim Chair of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
Nikkan takes over from Kate Mason who has chaired the Society for nearly four years, helping establish new partnerships, bring in our new Director and lay the groundwork for a long-term strategy. All at the Society wish to thank Kate for her guidance, governance, and counsel over this time.
Commenting on her recent appointment Nikkan Woodhouse said:
“Thanks to the trustees for inviting me to chair this wonderful society of talented makers. When originally conceived in 1887, this pioneering group were the change-makers, creative thinkers, and positive activists of their time. Former presidents such as Walter Crane and William Morris were facing the impacts of mass industrialisation on design and on traditional skills. They saw the need for a body that would exhibit the best in decorative art, raise standards of workmanship and improve the lot of artisans. Nearly 140 years later we are again facing some huge societal changes with the evolution of digitalisation and AI technology. Our society is well placed to look to the future of craft; championing sustainable work, putting the right value on materials and design, and offering a space for positive activism, care and creativity."
Executive Director Jenny Starr said:
“A warm welcome to Nikkan. We are both excited to be working together, building on the outstanding provenance of this society, and shaping an exciting strategic direction fit for the current landscape. As a core priority we pride ourselves on profiling and curating public exhibitions of inspirational craft from our members. Our next exhibition ‘Designer Craft at Bankside’ will be held this year at Bankside Gallery, London from 20 November – 1 December 2024. We are looking forward to expanding our community and scope in the coming year.”
