Art Deco Centenary celebrated at the London Transport Museum
SDC Fellow Dan Maier is honoured to have her artwork for Hatton Cross Underground Station featured in the London Transport Museum's new Art Deco poster exhibition.
Known for her vibrant, large-scale public art, Dan’s window artwork spanning over 40 metres is recognised in this prestigious exhibition, which celebrates the centenary of the Art Deco movement.
A Fellow and Council Member of the SDC, Dan Maier began her career in textiles and gained international acclaim for her original Knitted Chandeliers. Working on a wide range of commissions throughout her career, these have included artwork for cruise ships, window displays for national retailers and props for West End theatres. Her commitment to creating both "beautiful and useful" designs, a philosophy shared with SDC founder William Morris, is evident in her growing portfolio of commissions for Transport for London (TfL).
Often taking inspiration from a station’s architectural heritage, Dan designs installations to revitalise these transport hubs through her dynamic use of colour, brightening up passenger journeys.
Her Piccadilly line projects include:
- Hatton Cross - window artwork paying homage to Tom Eckersley’s mural (Concord’s tail fin) at Heathrow
- Southgate - window artwork inspired by the Art Deco/Streamline Moderne design style of Charles Holden's iconic listed building
- Hounslow West - an illuminated backdrop for the station's listed passimeter (former ticket office), featuring a live model railway
- Hammersmith - window artwork spanning over 100 metres across 6 locations as part of the station's 150-year celebration, which includes reference to William Morris’s Kelmscott Press
Moving to a different line, Dan is currently working on her next London Underground commission - an artwork for Wembley Central station. This ongoing dedication to public art underscores Dan's role in enriching the everyday experience of commuters and celebrating the unique design legacy of London's transport infrastructure.
We congratulate her on her well-deserved inclusion in the London Transport Museum's exhibition and look forward to seeing her next piece of work at Wembley Central!
