Pattern & Ornamental Encounters
A public art installation celebrating the work of SDC member Jennifa Chowdhury has been unveiled on Southampton’s East Street to celebrate South Asian arts and culture.
Earlier this year, John Hansard Gallery held an Open Call alongside GO! Southampton, Southampton Forward and Art Asia for Hampshire/Isle of Wight artists to design artworks for East Street in Southampton celebrating South Asian arts and culture.
We are delighted to learn that textile artist Jennifa Chowdhury's artwork 'Pattern & Ornamental Encounters' was chosen as the winning entry. Jennifa's work can now be found on East Street on the corner of Queensway in the city.
Jennifa's work explores contemporary expressions of identity, heritage, and belonging, with a specific focus on the experiences of British-Bengali-Muslims. Her visual language is embedded in the exploration of pattern and ornamentation, drawing inspiration from the diverse influences behind traditional Islamic architecture, especially the construction of geometric patterns renowned for their symmetry and proportion.
