Sadler's Wells East Tapestries

Designed by artist Eva Rothschild RA and woven by SDC fellow Margaret Jones and other expert weavers at West Dean Tapestry Studio

Sadler’s Wells East is a brand-new theatre for dance, opening as part of East Bank in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford which will be home to everything from hip hop to ballet, rave to rhumba and kathak to krumping.

They commissioned artist Eva Rothschild RA to design two tapestries for the new theatre. The In Breath and The Out Breath both measure 4 x 5 metres each and were entirely made by hand, with the wool being hand dyed to Eva’s exact requirements. They were woven at West Dean Professional Tapestry Studio by SDC fellow Margaret Jones FSDC, Jo Howard, Philip Sanderson and Emma Straw. The In Breath and The Out Breath are the largest artworks to be created on the loom at West Dean Tapestry Studio, and the first to be created for a theatre.

The tapestries are displayed in the theatre's public foyer – you can just walk in to see them. They are amazing.
