Jillian Harvey LSDC
Printmaking

Jillian Harvey approaches her screen printing as an observation of place; inspired by her travels and translated through a process where white space becomes increasingly important. That white space is a metaphor for her own detachment when travelling, as the majority of her images and sketches are made in solitude. The Far East influences her work and that aesthetic runs throughout and is best described by the Japanese word “Ma” (間); a pause, an area between two structural parts.
The pause is meditative and integral to Jillian's process and wellbeing, giving her time to breathe physically and metaphorically as she looks at her surroundings and takes in the architecture and elements around. The elements and buildings pique her interest and inform the development of ideas, colour, form and presentation: she draws them all together into the finished piece from the pictures in her mind, sketches and photos.
As important as the breathing space is the celebration of colour and pattern within the finished print and each palette is chosen as a reflection of the season. With up to 15 individual layers, the transparent and opaque inks often form new shapes and create new colours; this exploration is never-ending and in itself is a path on which to travel.
