The Gane Trust

The Gane Trust gives an Annual Award for Excellence to a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, selected by a panel of Honorary Members. This is in addition to the Trust's principal activity of the general grant application scheme and University and College Awards scheme.

The Gane Trust was created in 1954 in Bristol by Crofton Gane, furniture designer and manufacturer, to support individuals engaged in arts, crafts, design, social care and welfare. Passionate about the new modern spirit in design in the early twentieth century, Crofton founded the Bristol branch of the newly formed Design and Industries Association. A fellow Quaker wrote of him in 1968:

"Crofton Gane's main concern was that men should enjoy their work and find fulfilment in it... Beauty of form and excellence of craftsmanship were his delight."
