Wood Carving & Turning

About Greg
Greg is a woodturner and Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) scholar who uses both indigenous British wood earmarked for firewood and recycled wood for his base materials. Woodturning enables him to find the buried treasure hidden in the heart of wood; and his designs showcase its natural beauty, combining these organic qualities with narratives examining issues that confront us all as human beings. Greg’s aim is to produce unique statement pieces based on ancient and modern forms, challenging woodturning norms by using new techniques and materials.

Biography Back to top

Greg is a self taught woodturner who started his woodturning life eight years ago. He has constantly sought to push boundaries, both in terms of his skill and in the possibilities that wood affords. As a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) Turners Company scholar, he has exhibited at: the Crafts Council's Collect Open Exhibition; the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition; the Worshipful Company of Turners Master exhibition; and was a finalist at the Wood Awards.

The joy of woodturning, for master craftsman Greg, lies in the journey of exploration that uncovers the intrinsic beauty of his chosen medium. Wood’s story is in its growth rings, colours, burrs and rot - fine art created by nature - which his skill then reveals, often using modern techniques.

As a sustainable material, Greg feels that wood offers huge creative possibilities; and he uses it to articulate and explore issues that are important to him, creating a focus for dialogue among those viewing his work that then exponentially increases beyond galleries and homes.

His ultimate aim is to show that woodturning has relevance to modern interiors, offers exciting possibilities for designers and artists, is a sustainable craft and, as a hand crafted skill, offers a real alternative to mass produced manufacturing and design. Moreover, Greg feels that if the craft is to have a place in the future, we must demonstrate the qualities of wood, aesthetically and functionally, and showcase its sustainability. His work ethic and approach is to simplify processes and materials and focus on the wood itself by using its unique properties to produce exceptional art.
