Printmaking

About Jan
Jan’s work as a designer/printmaker/artist/educator has evolved over thirty five years of practice. As a professional textile designer she has adapted and widened her practice and skills, embracing new technologies to create a wide variety of designs and individual artwork. Hand-painted, printmaking and digital media are intrinsically linked to the creation of her work.  She works in many printmaking processes - photopolymer etching, collagraph, a variety of monotype techniques, linocut, aquatint, drypoint and etching.

Biography Back to top

Printmaking is a large part of Jan's practice and she uses a variety of processes often using more than one process to create her work. Jan uses monotype both with and without a press. Some of the monotype prints have thirty layers or more to create the finished prints. Photopolymer etching is a very important process and she uses hand drawn and photographic imagery. Jan uses linocut and loves creating prints using multi block, jigsaw and reduction techniques. She uses collagraph, cyanotype, carborundum, aquatint, etching and drypoint techniques, exploring textures, forms and interpreting the land, sea and the natural world.

Jan has worked commercially as a textile designer for many years, working for large companies both in the UK and internationally. She has lectured at Degree and MA Level together with teaching secondary and sixth form. Over the last 12 years she has worked on bespoke projects in Kenya, London, Hampshire and Dorset.

Her work is inspired by nature and is passionate about nature depletion and climate change. She draws inspiration from her close observations of the natural world, whether walking, sailing, or simply being immersed in her surroundings. Her camera, phone, and ever-present sketchbooks are essential tools for recording the environment, capturing the transient beauty of the world around her.
