Printmaking

About Rosie
Rosie is a printmaker based in Bath. Walking is an important source of inspiration for her and through the discipline of printmaking she is able to further her experience from being ‘on the path.’ In the studio she takes forward an idea by recalling a sense of place, having accessed somewhere on foot and made small drawings and notes on the spot. Rosie’s series of related linocuts use vibrant layers of colour and texture to record a route that she has followed. She exhibits her prints in group shows and has a solo exhibition of her work in Bath in 2025.

Biography Back to top

Rosie experiments technically with colour and texture by cutting or etching the surface of the lino and gradually builds up thinly printed layers of richly stained colour. The cut shapes contrast with the softer etched areas producing a vibrant surface. They are printed by hand on paper, using the press in her studio, usually in editions of only four or five prints.

Her print series ‘Song of the Path’ celebrates the actual paths along which she has been walking. These prints capture the vibrant colours of rows of lavender at a Somerset farm, or the tall grasses and brambles along an ancient pathway beyond Bath. Some works follow a more urban route - along the Feeder Canal in Bristol on a bright autumnal morning.

‘Song of the River’, recalls riverside walks in Spain. Rosie combined natural forms depicted in the preserved fragments of pieces of stained glass she had drawn in the cathedral. She experimented layering thin washes of colour and texture, to represent the floating debris and the cycle of the river’s journey, finding beauty in an urban setting.

‘Spanish Paths’ are prints of the rugged area inland of Alicante. Rosie wanted to capture the dryness of the landscape with its stark contrast of scorched trees and the dusty softness of the colours and textures she encountered. She followed a dried riverbed low down in the valley, with tall reeds and bleached pathways snaking around banks.
