Alison Levy MSDC
Jewellery
Alison works mainly with metals, in particular silver and gold. Her work often uses box structures and hollow forms, which are sliced, cut or pierced. She likes to play with assumptions about weight and solidity: folding air into heavy-looking pieces, mis-matching pairs, hiding sounds in hollow shapes, piercing objects with tubes and wires, and making moving parts. Her pieces are made by eye using traditional hand systems, but often look engineered. Sometimes she takes off in a different direction, for example in her seascape pieces, which have used shells, shale, plastic figures and copper netting.
Alison likes to make work which looks beautiful, even formal, but also intrigues, or amuses, or holds a secret inside. She enjoys the idea of seemingly simple forms which can also puzzle. How was this made? What is inside it? What makes that noise? What's different about this earring from that one?
Alison did an art foundation course at Chelsea School of Art, then studied English at Cambridge and later social work at South Bank University. She attended numerous adult education jewellery courses; as these were superb foundations for practice she does not define herself as self-taught. She has been a maker since 2003.
