Woven Textiles

About Charlotte
Charlotte Grierson is an award winning weaver. From her studio at Cockpit in South East London she designs scarf ranges for small scale production in the UK. Her artwork hangings are inspired by the geological fomations of coastal landscapes of the south coast of England. Charlotte has also been teaching practical weaving classes for over 15 years and is now running a rolling programme of 1 and 2 day workshops on a range of design and weaving topics.

Biography Back to top

Charlotte trained as a weave designer learning about the different weave structures and how to create patterns and textures in fabric and to work with colour. However it was experimenting with the making process itself that most fascinated her. Charlotte's most recent work comes directly from this experimentation and has led to a collection of woven wall mounted artwork weaving with a range of materials including paper yarn and wire.

Her collection of one-off hand woven scarves; designed for both men and women, are woven in silk or in combination with other natural material such as merino and linen. She works with these materials, colour and the structure of the weave to create scarves that are elegant, timeless and with a drape that is beautifully soft to wear.

Charlotte also works with a weaver in west Wales to produce a collection of scarves in 100% lambswool. Designed and sampled in her London studio they are woven in small batch production on old power looms in what was the heart of the old Welsh woollen industry. Back in her studio the scarves are individually finished including the hand twisted pearl fringes.

In 2007 Charlotte was selected to join the Art Workers' Guild and in the same year as a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and 2017 was elected to become a Fellow of the Society.
