Bridget Lane MSDC

Woven Textiles

About Bridget
Bridget Lane designs and weaves contemporary tapestries. Each piece is unique and handwoven on an upright frame. Influenced by the forms of late Modernism, her work is a response to the seemingly mundane, a way of reinterpreting the world. Seen through a different lens, these hidden gems that we often brush past are transformed and given a new sense of life. She invites the viewer to embark on a journey of discovery into a woven world of shapes and forms, potentially reassessing the art of tapestry.

Biography Back to top

Having worked in book publishing for several years, Bridget enjoys passing on stories. Through her travels for work, she has been introduced to different worlds and cultures, which have added layers to her personal story. While visiting an open studio exhibition, she found a different way of portraying a narrative - tapestry weaving.

She attended various courses, including the Developing Skills and Creative Language in Tapestry Weaving at West Dean College of Arts & Conservation. Since winning the Cordis Prize Showcase for Emerging Artists, she has exhibited work in the UK and Australia. In 2023, she was selected as a Member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.

Bridget makes her uniquely designed tapestries using a high warp frame. After developing an image, she slowly weaves line by line, using predominantly wool weft and cotton warp. She often incorporates circular forms and clear lines in her work, which is a challenging construct in grid-based tapestry weaving. Intensity of colour is an important aspect of her work, and Bridget continues to explore how visually simple forms can be enhanced with divergent colour tones.

Based in London, she regularly teaches tapestry weaving courses, and enjoys helping others develop their own journey in woven textiles.
