Stacey Poultney MSDC

Stacey’s knowledge of flat glass, bonding and coldworking techniques enables him to construct layered sculptures that explore depth and structure. His practice is further supported by a background in mechanical engineering, metalworking, machining and woodworking, all of which play an important role in how his work is constructed and presented.

The current direction of Stacey’s practice is increasingly focused on developing the scale and complexity of each work, incorporating materials and systems commonly associated with industrial settings. Utilising his broad technical skill set, he has begun developing mechanical systems that facilitate a transition from static glass sculpture towards automated installations suitable for gallery environments.

His work draws inspiration from graffiti culture, urban decay, brutalist architecture and industrial design. He is particularly interested in the contrast between rigid, repetitive structures and the unpredictable patterns of decay. Float glass, commonly used in architectural glazing, forms the foundation of his latest work, selected for its subtle tint and uniformity.

Precision is central to Stacey’s making process. He produces detailed technical layouts and two-dimensional plans incorporating the fixings and enclosures integral to the presentation of each work. He enjoys working to fine tolerances and place a strong emphasis on quality. Project-specific jigs are designed and fabricated to support complex bonding processes and facilitate accurate coldworking at precise angles. These bespoke tools enable consistent, repetitive forms to be achieved within individual works, presenting a technical challenges that he particularly enjoys.

Glass offers a wide range of optical qualities, which Stacey uses intentionally by controlling opacity throughout the material rather than relying solely on surface finishes. Drawing on his background in stained glass, he kiln-fires silver stain and glass paint across multiple layers to introduce controlled colour and varying levels of opacity.

The works supporting his profile are completed to an exhibitable standard. While he values these as individual pieces, he increasingly views them as early versions of a larger concept that is shaping the direction of his personal practice.

• St Fagans National Museum of History, Cardiff. Remaking the glass frontage of the relocated building “The Vulcan Hotel”.

• St David’s Church, Mold, North Wales. Jonah Jones Dalle de Verre large glazing scheme. The removal, stabilisation and restoration of 23 individual panels, complete rebuild of 1 panel, total of 24 panels. Relocated from Morfa Nefyn to St Davids Mold.

• Market Arcade, High Street, Newport. The supply of 60m2 of hand cut, replica, Victorian glass tiles and 40LM replica Victorian glass corner radials.

• Bishop of St Davids private Chapel, Abergwili, Carmarthenshire. The removal of original single glazed scheme and installation of new scheme into original frames utilising clear backing sheets and 2k silicone bonding techniques.

• St Davids Church, St David’s Street, Neath. In situ repair and stabilisation of windows fabricated from glass on an aluminium armature designed by Frank Roper.

• St Michael, Blewbury, Oxfordshire. Installation of 6 large glass banners in groups of 3 within the belltower.

• Bath, Elim Pentecostal Church. The Restoration of a large and complex Victorian leaded scheme.

• Burtons Store, 16-18 High Street, Abergavenny. The removal, restoration and reinstallation of historic glass shop front.

• The Beacon, Alex Road Design Exchange, Swansea. The fabrication of 12 large glass panels with 2k silicone bonded art glass.

• Beaumaris Castle. Installation of new stained glass scheme with cold bonded glass elements.

• Conwy Castle. Fabrication and installation of stained glass in chapel.
