Furniture & Boxes

About Christine
Christine creates wall-based artworks and functional pieces of art with a marquetry surface. She studied fine art and after a career in teaching left to concentrate on her own practice. Prompted by a passion for interior/furniture design she enrolled on a cabinetmaking course where she developed her own method of creating designs using wood veneers, recognizing the space that marquetry could occupy as a contemporary visual medium. The award of a Crafts Council Setting-Up Grant in 2001 enabled her to establish a workshop in Leeds where she creates her unique wall-panels and pieces of furniture.

Biography Back to top

Christine Meyer-Eaglestone's marquetry surface designs on wall-based artworks and functional pieces play with spatial illusion through vibrant use of colour, bold geometry and architectural reference.

She doesn't visualize a design on paper other than a very rough sketch, preferring instead to think through making. This process starts by surrounding herself with a large selection of both conventional and 'reconstructed' wood veneers, available in a multitude of colours and grain patterns and sourced from Italy where they are mostly created from fast-growing poplar. She continues by hand-cutting all veneers and using tape to join elements as this process allows her to let relationships of form, colour, texture and space evolve - the geometric forms she creates grow intuitively while seeking to construct alternative visual spaces.

Structure is central to her designs - balance, counterpoise, dynamic growth and rhythm are among the essential elements in her compositions. Working as fast as the medium allows, she manipulates line and colour, creates shapes and defines their edges, juxtaposes hard-edged geometry with organic pattern - sometimes creating tension and vitality and at other times imposing a sense of order and balance. Precision and craftsmanship are critical to her practice and this is never compromised by the apparent spontaneity of her designs.

She draws inspiration from architecture and music as well as the natural environment and among her influences lists early 20th century art and design (Cubism, Constructivism, Suprematism, Bauhaus etc.) as well as Japanese design.
