Ceramics

About Stephanie
Slicing the walls of hand-thrown forms has led to a unique way of exploring the design of both sculptural and functional ceramics. This technique, combined with radiant form-enhancing glazes, has allowed Stephanie to develop a distinctive body of work conveying human and elemental flow: dance, spirals, waves and vortices in the spirit of the 20th Century Futurists, who aimed to capture movement in 2D paintings. After many years as a self-taught tableware potter in the States, Norway and England, she embarked on an art training at City Lit in London, graduating in 2011 with a Ceramics Diploma.
Biography Back to top

Slicing the walls of hand-thrown forms has led to a unique way of exploring the design of both sculptural and functional ceramics. This technique, combined with radiant form-enhancing glazes, has allowed me to develop a distinctive body of work conveying human movement, dance, attitudes and emotions in the spirit of the 20th Century Futurists, who aimed to capture movement in 2D paintings. To intensify these sculptural forms I developed a palette of radiant matt glazes containing barium, lithium and copper. These are sprayed on the surface, resulting in dramatically different shades according to the thickness of application, which enhances the form.

Use of these malleable and responsive materials enables me to offer a lively and novel interpretation of human movement and organic growth through space and time.

Background

After many years as a self-taught tableware potter in the States, Norway and England, I at last embarked on an art training at City Lit in London, graduating in 2011 with a Ceramics Diploma certified by London Metropolitan University. This equipped me with new ways of adapting traditional techniques to share my view of the world. I also produce a range of tableware, Dorking Country Crockery, in a rustic style.
