About Joanna
Joanna Terry is a ceramicist working in Parian Porcelain. Casting grasses and native plants observed through her daily walking. This ritual is often the starting point of each new collection where she gathers found wood and stones to form plinths. Choosing to cast clay direct in the landscape, helps to minimise her impact on these often fragile lands. The delicate forms are high fired, free of setters, to encourage the natural twist and turn in the firing process. Balanced lightly on found materials, these highly translucent forms references ones own vulnerability and our need to be centred.

Biography Back to top

Joanna Terry doesn't strive to make the most perfect pot, to have symmetry in the sides, or a flat rim. What she wishes her pots to speak of, are the wildness of nature, of times walking through long summer meadows, blowy seashores and cool ancient woodlands. It is in these places she find her inspiration rather than in the precise or the planned. Joanna does not see those things echoed in nature. It is in the haphazard, the broken, the random that is most pleasing.

Joanna's process of creating takes on principles of the Japanese practise of Shinrin-Yoku (Forest Bathing). Taking the time to listen to what is around you, seeing what lays under your feet, feeling the elements touch your skin and taking this precious time to re-connect with nature. It is a meditative experience, connecting one directly with the earth through quiet walking in the landscape.

It is often a spontaneous decision which draws her to the subject. The interplay of light that casts an eye on the often unregarded fragments of nature. Casting grasses, bark and wild plants outside in clay. Nothing is removed from site and plants are carefully removed from the clay once incised. These soft prints are taken back to the studio, where a positive plaster moulds is cast. From these Plaster Bas Reliefs Joanna creates delicately textured vessels in Parian Porcelain paper clay. These fragile forms are fired free of setters, left unsupported in the kiln, the vessels are free to take on their own forms during the high firing process. With the addition of light, the translucency of the porcelain reveals to the viewer the native beauty of these captured moments in the landscape.
