Alexandra Duncan MSDC

Stitched & Constructed Textiles

About Alexandra
Alex is fascinated by the possibilities provided by the infinite range of materials available to the contemporary artist, and loves experimenting with new materials. She likes working with natural fibres and colours, based on hand stitching. Her work is usually inspired by nature, particularly the sea, rivers and waterfalls. However she also enjoys the process of tackling an abstract idea and working through it to develop a visual approach
Biography Back to top

Alex came to embroidery by way of upholstery and furniture restoration, which led her to make stitched seat covers to fit to old chairs. She then discovered a passionate interest in designing. The City & Guilds course introduced her to the huge possibilities of techniques like dyeing, manipulating, burning etc., as well as stitching and using a mixture of media. Studying for the Diploma at Windsor she discovered art and began to relate art to stitching.

To help to develop her artistic skills she has taken painting, drawing and life drawing classes, and a continuing advanced design class.

Although inspired by nature, she is also fascinated by the possibilities of trying out new materials. This experimentation is what she finds the most interesting part of the artistic process.
